From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Britney Spears wowed fans gathered at Brighton Pride, the country's biggest LGBTQ celebration.

The singer, who brought her Las Vegas residency show 'Piece of Me' to the East Sussex coast on Saturday night (4 August), performed many hit singles to an adoring crowd comprised of 57,000.

It marked Spears' first time on stage in the UK since 2011. The singer impressed as she performed routines with approximately 20 backing dances throughout the 90-minute set.

During the encore, Spears waved a flag emblazoned with the LGBTQ symbol as the audience vacated Preston Park chanting her lyrics from songs including “I'm a Slave 4 U” “Womaniser” and “Toxic” into the night sky.

She threw it right back to the beginning of her career giving time to early tracks such as “...Baby One More Time” and “Oops!... I Did It Again” which were released in 1999 and 2000, respectively.

The singer had teased her show on Twitter ahead of the event expressing her excitement at sharing love and equality.

She later thanked fans for the huge response writing to her Twitter followers: “Brighton Pride.... all 57,000 of you are perfectly beautiful. Heard it was a record-breaking turnout!!! Thank you for a fabulous show... my fabulous fans. I love you all.”

The evening descended into chaos, however, after police closed Brighton station leaving thousands dangerously marooned. Organisers have since released a statement detailing the 'potentially deadly' situation.
