Billie Joe Armstrong has announced that “democracy is at stake” if Donald Trump achieves a second term in the White House.

The Green Day frontman revealed he is backing Democratic candidate Joe Biden in the 2020 US presidential race in a post on Instagram.

Sharing a brief clip of his band’s hit 2004 single “American Idiot”, Armstrong warned against the prospect of a re-elected Trump.

“It’s 1 September 2020 and I am WIDE AWAKE IN AMERICA. This has been the most unprecedented year of our lives,” he wrote.

“A pandemic. Racial uprising. As the song goes ‘wake me up when September ends’. I plead to everyone to WAKE UP AND REGISTER TO VOTE.”

Armstrong said he was “wholeheartedly” backing Biden for president and Kamala Harris for vice president.

“I have not a single reservation in my mind,” he said. “All of my enthusiasm is for BIDEN/HARRIS! TRUMP HAS GOT TO GO.”

The 48-year-old continued by saying that America would suffer under another four years of Trump in office.

“Our democracy is at stake,” he said. “Our earth is at stake. We need health care for all. We need justice. We need peace. We need police reform. If you are 18 and over PLEASE register to vote!! This is urgent. This is a national emergency.”

He concluded by urging US citizens to vote on 3 November and shared a list of swing states, including Florida and Texas.

“We must be WIDE AWAKE FROM SEPTEMBER TO NOVEMBER 3rd!!!” he wrote. “This is a call to arms for the soul of America! Our lives depend on this election!! Grab a group of friends and register! Grab a group of friends and vote! Tell EVERYONE!”
