From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Billie Eilish has surprised fans by going live on Instagram and plucking out random people to speak with personally.

The singer, 18, admitted to being “bored” in coronavirus lockdown, so thought she’d try and communicate with her fandom despite “not knowing” how it worked.

Within minutes, the stream was being viewed by 270,000 people.

Eilish then began surprising bemused fans by accepting their request to be added to the chat.

The lucky fans included people from Australia, Azerbaijan and the UK. Most broke down in tears after realising they were having a personal chat with Eilish.

One fan showed off impressive drawings of Eilish, while another thanked the singer for cheering her up after having a “bad day”.

Another fan couldn’t stop crying, to which Eilish said: “I love you. I’m going to get to see you one day and I’ll hug you.”

She bonded with another about their love of US sitcom The Office.

Her brother and songwriting collaborator Finneas was absent from the live stream.
