From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Beyoncé surprised fans last night after dropping into ABC’s Disney Family Singalong to sing a cover of “When You Wish Upon a Star” from Pinocchio.

The Lemonade singer said: “Hello to all of the families across the world. I'm very proud and honoured to be a part of the Disney family and to help present The Disney Songbook Singalong, in partnership with Feeding America.”

She continued: ”I'd like to dedicate this song to all of the healthcare workers who've been working tirelessly to keep us healthy and safe. We greatly appreciate you.“

Before signing off, she added, ”Please hold on to your families tight. Please be safe. Don't give up hope. We're gonna get through this. I promise. God bless you,“

Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, the singalong saw Ariana Grande singing “I Won’t Say (I’m in Love)” from Hercules, Darren Criss did his own version of “I Wa’na Be Like You” from The Jungle Book, and the cast of High School Musical sang “We’re All in This Together”.

Beyoncé’s appearance was considered to be the highlight of the night. One fan wrote: “Just perfect” while another humorously pointed out that “ABC didn’t even bother to put the lyrics up for Beyoncé’s song. They said don’t you even THINK about singing when Beyoncé sings!!!!!”

Beyoncé has a reputation for surprising fans. The 2018 joint album with her husband Jay Z Everything is Love was unexpected, as was 2013’s Lemonade.
