Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The outlook for female musicians seems to be improving across the festival circuit slowly but surely, enhanced somewhat by this year's Glastonbury line-up including more women than the festival has had in quite a while.

Unfortunately, the same can't be said for Australian festival Spilt Milk which announced its lineup last week (9 June)

Alongside announced acts Flume, Cosmo's Midnight and Sticky Fingers is singer-songwriter Vera Blue who, we're sure, didn't intend on flying the flag for an entire gender when signing up for the music festival.

You can check out a live performance from Blue below.

In all fairness to Spilt Milk's organisers, they have since reached out to Mashable Australia to suggest they will attempt to rectify this issue with its second lineup announcement.

They wrote:

"Gender inequality exists throughout society and we all have an obligation to help foster change, an opportunity we missed with our initial announcement... Assembling exciting lineups for events of this nature is incredibly complex, with many different, and often competing, contributing factors. With our growing understanding of this issue, and recognising that every small step matters, we are committed to delivering more opportunities for female artists to help move the industry in the right direction."

Let's hope they pay attention to other successful female musicians including Courtney Barnett and Melissa Tkautz. Or, say, Sia.

Spilt Milk is due to take place in Canberra this December.
