While the rumours surrounding their alleged romance have been swirling since last year, many were surprised to find the singer speak out so openly about the “situation” during a new interview.
Alsina claimed the I Am Legend actor approved the relationship "due to the transformation from their marriage to life partnership”, and suggested he was with Pinkett Smith for “years”.
The singer is better known in the US than the UK. His highest position in the UK Albums Chart was number 60 for his 2015 record This Thing Called Life.
Testimony, his debut record released in 2014, hit number 10 in the UK R&B Albums Chart. In the US, it reached number two in the Billboard 200.
His third album, titled The Product III: stateofEMERGEncy, was released last week (26 June).
Alsina, who hails from New Orleans, has featured on three DJ Khaled tracks.
He has been nominated for six BET Awards, winning three – Best New Artist and Coca-Cola Viewers’ Choice Award for the song “I Luv This S***” in 2014.
The singer is said to have met Pinkett Smith after being introduced by her son Jaden Smith in 2015.
Initial rumours of a potential romance escalated after the singer “received a text” from a person referred to by Pinkett Smith’s middle name in the music video of Alsina's 2019 song “Nunya”.
“I totally gave myself to that relationship for years of my life, and I truly and really, really, deeply loved and have a ton of love for her,” he told The Breakfast Club DJ Angela Yee.
He described the breakdown of their alleged romance as “probably... the hardest thing” he’s ever experienced “in this lifetime”.
The Independent has contacted Pinkett Smith for comment. Her representatives previously told the New York Post that Alsina’s claims are “absolutely not true”.
