One Direction and Katy Perry were the big winners at last night’s American Music Awards.

The British boy band and US singer took home three awards each, but Perry was not present at the ceremony due to her touring commitments in Australia.

One Direction won artist of the year; favourite band, duo or group and favourite album for their record Midnight Memories.

Sam Smith proved another British success on the night, beating Pharrell Williams and John Legend to win favourite male artist
