Music & Me: Carrie Mac
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Rising soul pop star Carrie Mac gives us the skinny on her favourite tunes, pop idols... and Jedward.
The first record I bought was...
I think it was the Spice Girls first album but I’m not entirely sure! I remember being given a mix tape from my parents with "Don't You Want Me" by Human League on it and learning the words and recording myself when I was quite young.
The first gig I went to was...
When I was 15 I went with one of my best friends to see Pink at the SECC in Glasgow. We got the bus after school and both wore pink tops, I remember watching her and thinking "wow" I want to be a singer!
My favourite album is...
Fleetwood Mac Rumours without a doubt! I am obsessed with their song "Go Your Own Way" .
But my parents always liked...
Joy Division, Sublime, Ween. They used to play Tracy Chapman to me everyday as that was my nap CD when I was young; "Fast Car" is such a great song.
I couldn’t marry someone who liked...
The Crazy Frog song, it drives me insane!
In the studio I like to wear...
Anything that’s warm and comfy as its freezing in the studio I record in and I also like to eat a lot when I’m there. It’s just a natural reaction for me to literally eat anything I can find while in there!
I’d love to have on my show...
I would LOVE to have Jedward as I find them highly entertaining but my dream guest would be Katy Perry, although I would be so starstruck I probably wouldn’t be able to speak to her.
One thing that must change in the music industry is...
I know a lot of extremely talented musicians who are unsigned and deserve mainstream recognition, but without the money and the right people it’s a struggle for anyone to break through.
A great album cover is...
Christina Aguilera's "Stripped". This album, when I heard it, however cheesy this may sound, was a huge influence on what I wanted to do! I must have been about 14 or something when this came out and it was the driving force that made me wants to sing and be able to someday have an album out like that! Throughout high school, college and even when I was working away in my old job playing rubbish gigs, when I felt like giving up if I put this on it would remind me of my ultimate goal.
On my iPod I listen most to...
Right now it has to be Adele’s album, especially the track "Someone like you". It’s beautiful, I am also loving Jessie J's "Who You Are". Jeff Buckley’s "Last Goodbye" is another favourite.
If I could have written any song it would have been...
"Go your own way" by Fleetwood Mac.
The worst song I’ve heard is...
Probably Ozone "Mi Ya Hi". However I secretly LOVE it and have it on CD single which has five mega mixes on it. I used to take it with me to parties my friends did not appreciate this!
Carrie Mac’s debut single "Till I See You Again" (ProtoBeat Records) is out on 18 April
