Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Breakage (James Boyle to his mum) drops the kind of bass heavy D’n’B meets breaks beats that hits you square in the chest. This producer du jour’s tracks have now been voted “Hottest Record in the World” five times in a row by Zane Lowe. He took time out from hitting chests and wooing Lowes to answer a few of our questions...

The first record I bought was...

Michael Jackson's Bad. I didn't buy it, my dad bought it for me, but I carried it everywhere for about two years!

The first gig I went to was...

I think it was Coldplay... I was a late bloomer on gigs, I went to too many raves!

My favourite album is...

Led Zeppelin III – there are so many amazing tunes on there.

But my parents always liked...

A bit of everything really, from classical to rock and everything in between.

I couldn’t marry someone who liked...

Gabba.

On stage I like to wear...

...myself out to the point of falling asleep on the keyboard.

I’d love to perform with...

Tom Jones. He's an absolute boss man!

One thing that must change in the music industry is...

YouTube. It's great publicity but I think people are just turning to playing tunes on there instead of buying it.

A great album cover is...

Massive Attack's Mezzanine. I love how sharp, clinical and minimal it is, but it still manages to stand out.

On my iPod I listen most to...

I rarely listen to music on the iPod to be honest, I like to make tunes up in my head while I commute.

If I could have written any song it would have been...

I'm not sure, but for some reason right now I'm thinking of “Peaches” by The Presidents Of The United States Of America! Either that or Radiohead’s “Pyramid song” – it’s simply stunning in every way.

The worst song I’ve heard is...

Some of the tunes I made that never came out! Other than that, most new American commercial hip-hop and R&B.

Breakage releases his new single “Fighting Fire” (Digital Soundboy recordings) featuring Jess Mills on 28 February.
