Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Indie musician Sufjan Stevens is the most popular act on The Hype Machine on August 30, having just released the EP All Delighted People. Dream-pop duo Beach House and rapper Kanye West follow in second and third, while Miami Horror and The xx have just entered the top ten.
Miami Horror is a disco-style electro-pop act from Melbourne with influences including Prince and ABBA. The band released its debut studio album, Illumination, on August 20, and bloggers are passing around several MP3s from the album, especially "Sometimes," featuring Alan Palomo of Neon Indian. No Genre (www.nogenremusic.com) says of that track, "Between the bubbling synth bassline and the jangly R&B guitar figure and stutter-step horns, instrumentation that recalls the best of Michael Jackson and Prince in the late 70s and early 80s, it's hard not to feel good listening to this one."
London band The xx, a frequent topic among bloggers since the release of its debut album in 2009, is in the blogs Monday thanks to a remix by LAZRtag of its track "Stars" and another by Tiga of the band's track "Shelter." Daily Beatz (dailybeatz.com) says of the "Stars" remix, "Probably the biggest reason this remix is such a smashing success is that Luvtek and Addison have managed to pump up the jams without losing the quintessential minimalist vibe that make The xx who they are."
