Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Atlanta indie rock band Deerhunter is the most popular act of the moment on The Hype Machine, as it readies the September release of Halcyon Digest. In the second and third spots on July 28 are husband-wife duo Tennis and Los Angeles duo Best Coast, while Grinderman and Marnie Stern are new to the top ten.

Grinderman is a rock band formed in 2006 by Nick Cave and three fellow members of The Bad Seeds. The group released a self-titled debut album in 2007 and is now planning a second album, Grinderman 2, for release on September 13. A first single from that album, "Heathen Child," has now been offered up for streaming by the group's label Mute Records. Sonic Masala (sonicmasala.blogspot.com) comments, "It has a different feel than its predecessor [ Grinderman], but is no less squalid, diseased, filthy, and oh so seductive..."

Marnie Stern is an American guitarist who has so far released two full-length albums featuring her songwriting and technically skilled guitar-playing. She has just announced that her third album, this one self-titled, is due out October 5, and the announcement was accompanied by the album's first single, "For Ash." Citizen Dick (citizendick.org) calls Stern's style "sometimes strangled, sometimes assaulting with strobelight intensity... There is not a soul in music producing this kind of sound."
