From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Soul singer Cee-Lo Green, out with a new digitally released single that has become a viral hit, continues to be the most popular act on The Hype Machine on August 27. Dream-pop duo Beach House and American indie band Ra Ra Riot follow in second and third, while Dead Confederate and Lupe Fiasco are new among the most blogged acts.

Dead Confederate is an alternative rock band from Athens, Georgia, whose popularity has so far grown within the US thanks to a 2008 debut EP, a performance at the South by Southwest Festival, and a 2008 debut LP, Wrecking Ball, whose single "The Rat" peaked at number 39 on the US Billboard Modern Rock chart. The alt country/grunge act released a second full-length album, Sugar, on August 24, and bloggers are commenting on the LP and passing around the track "Run From the Gun," which Bedwetting Cosmonaut (bedwettingcosmonaut.com) calls "evenly layered psych-rock."

Lupe Fiasco is a Chicago-born rapper, producer, and CEO who has released three critically acclaimed solo albums, performs with post-punk band Japanese Cartoon, and counts Jay-Z, Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, and B.o.B. among his all-star list of collaborators. The artist has just released a new track called "Go To Sleep," reportedly from forthcoming album Food & Liquor 2. Melophobe (www.melophobe.com ) calls it "what you wish rappers were doing. What you wish all mixtapes were comprised of. Quality flows and gripping musical details are here for the taking."
