From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Montreal indie band Arcade Fire continues to top the list of the most popular acts on The Hype Machine on August 5, as bloggers review the band's just-released third album The Suburbs. Brooklyn band The Drums is in second place, while Austin, Texas-based psychedelic rock band The Black Angels is in third.

The Black Angels formed in 2004 and quickly grew in popularity thanks to the success of its MySpace page and its inclusion on the 2005 dual-disc compilation Psychedelica Vol.1 from Northern Star Records. The group's music has been featured on several TV and film soundtracks, most recently for Twilight: Eclipse, which has further expanded its fanbase. The band has just released the single "Telephone" from upcoming third album Phosphene Dream, slated for September release. The Devil Has the Best Tuna (besttuna.blogspot.com) calls the track "a light little jangly psych pop gem that sounds like it's drifted from the window of a Haight As[h]bury squat in the summer of love."

Los Angeles indie band Fol Chen has re-entered the top ten for the first time since the release of its album Part II: The New December in early June. The band has just offered up a new EP - a collections of remixes of its track "The Holograms" - for free on folchen.bandcamp.com. Among the most popular remixes being passed around the blogosphere is one by Vancouver's Teen Daze, which Stereogum (stereogum.com) says turns "Fol Chen's syncopated avant gym-class pop into an airier, less rigid excursion."
