Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. From April 30 through August 29, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is featuring We Want Miles: Miles Davis vs. Jazz, an exhibition of art and memorabilia honoring the legendary jazz musician.
We Want Miles previously ran at the Cité de la Musique in Paris, where Davis performed his final concert weeks before his death in 1991. The exhibition chronicles the trumpeter's life through materials including rare or previously unscreened concert film footage, original musical scores, a selection of Davis's trumpets and fellow band members' musical instruments, original documents, stage costumes, and vintage record pressings. The exhibit also chronicles Davis's impact on jazz and other genres through musical selections at 20 listening stations.
Several paintings by Davis and works by the artists he influenced, including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Mati Klarwein, and Niki de Saint Phalle, are on display, as are portraits of the artist by photographers including Annie Leibovitz, Herman Leonard, William Gottlieb, and Dennis Stock.
