Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. As U2 cancelled their Glastonbury music festival (UK) appearance, and postponed the US leg of their 360° tour on May 25, Gorillaz "called offering their services" according to Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis who welcomed their participation to his festival on the Glastonbury website, on May 26.
Gorillaz, a British project launched by Damon Albarn (Blur) and cartoonist Jamie Hewlett, is a virtual band that will become real on Glastonbury's biggest stage on Friday June 25, the same night as Femi Kuti and Dizzee Rascal.
One of the virtual members of the group, Murdoc, commented on the Glastonbury website in the band's usual sarcastic tone: "It was us or The Beatles and they split up years ago. The previous soldiers got pulled from duty last minute so it's up to my Plastic Beach naval cavalry to sail in and sort the battlefield out."
About the Irish band's tour future, U2's iconic bassist, The Edge, gave a video interview on U2.com and said: "It's not a cancellation of this tour, it's a postponement and we'll be back as possible as we can", confirming the eight weeks rest that Bono needs for his back recovery. The European leg of the 360° tour, starting in Turin on August 6, is therefore confirmed until future notice, while the American part of the tour is postponed until 2011.
The Glastonbury festival will take place between June 23 and 28 in Pilton (UK) with headliners such as Muse, Faithless or Stevie Wonder.
