Indie rock band The 1975 halted their secret set at Glastonbury after a rowdy fan threw a can on stage.

The Manchester-based trio kicked off a surprise opening show on the William’s Green stage at about 8.15pm last night – but they had to interrupt their set when a fight appeared to have broken out in the audience, according to NME.

Frontman Matthew Healy said: “Ladies and gentleman, I'm sorry to disrupt your peaceful Glastonbury but someone just threw a can onstage.

“I won't have people fighting at my Glastonbury.”

Bouncers escorted a man from the tent and the “Chocolate” singers resumed their show.

At the end of the set there was another surprise in store, when guests Metronomy were brought on stage just after 9.15pm.

Headliners Arcade Fire will take to the Pyramid Stage later tonight - and the Canadian indie band, who recently performed a series of sell-out shows in London, have hinted that they may be joined by some local acts.

Multi-instrumentalist Richard Reed Parry told NME: "I can't tell you in advance but we may have Somerset artists."

British rockers the Kaiser Chiefs were the first act to perform on The Other Stage at 11am today, in advance of their main show on the John Peel stage later this evening.

Fans will also be able to enjoy sets from Blondie, Lily Allen, Rudimental and Paolo Nutini throughout today.
