Nicki Minaj was late to her supporting Wireless set due to “travel issues”, festival organisers have said.

The US rapper was meant to begin her performance at 7pm on the main stage but did not appear until 9.30pm, cutting David Guetta’s set short.

A message that flagged up on screen at the festival said: “Special announcement: we are told that she was due to be speeding down the M1 from Luton Airport but we have lost contact with her, we are hoping that she will be here soon.”

It was thought the US rapper was delayed to the stage due to Jessie J arriving 30 minutes late for her set earlier in the evening, but it was later revealed Minaj was also late of her own accord.

Members of the press were told at 8pm that David Guetta and Nicki Minaj would be performing together at 8.30pm.

In a statement, a representative for Wireless said: “Due to last minute travel issues Nicki Minaj was unable to perform at her scheduled time of 7pm. However Nicki did join David Guetta on stage for one song and went on to perform a blistering set.

Guetta played for an hour and was then joined by Minaj for their collaboration “Hey Mama”. Minaj went on to play her other hits including “Feeling Myself”, “Anaconda” and “Super Bass”.

Highways England reported heavy congestion between junctions nine and eight in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, close to Luton Airport, following a car fire.
