Hay-on-Wye, Wales
A philosophy festival with a big dollop of music thrown in. The high-calibre music line-up includes Rae Morris, Lianne la Havas and Mike Skinner. New this year is also a day dedicated to poetry, with the singer-songwriter Labi Siffre, who wrote "Something Inside So Strong", Michael Horovitz and other spoken-word artists.

Sound City 22-24 May
Bramley-Moore Dock, Liverpool
The Vaccines, The Flaming Lips and Belle and Sebastian headline. Buzzy bands Spector, The Cribs and Peace will also play sets. Sunday at Sound City will see a warehouse party hosted by Fat White Family, known for their provocative and scummy on-stage antics.
The price: Three-day festival wristbands are £65 and single-day tickets are £35.
Field Day 6-7 June
Victoria Park, London
Now hailed as one of London's best festivals for its eclectic bill. "Folktronica" artist Caribou and shoegaze heroes Ride are headlining alongside FKA twigs, but no doubt the highlight of the weekend will be punk legend Patti Smith performing the whole of her classic album Horses.
The price: Saturday £54.50; Sunday £38; weekend £83.
The Big Noise Festival 13 June
The Coronet, London
A mixed bag of bands, DJs, comedians and artists join forces in support of The Big Issue Foundation. The line-up this year features Gypsy/punk/ska/Greek/reggae/jazz band Hallouminati and DJ Yoda with Balkan music group the Trans-Siberian March Band. Go and expand your mind.
The price: £16.50 including booking fee.
British Summer Time 18-27 June
Hyde Park, London
The festival is split into five separate events, which span a nine-day period of festivities. Florence Welch and Liam Gallagher have been known to attend, as has Cherie Blair. The line-up includes Blur performing songs from their first album in 12 years, The Magic Whip (20 June), The Who supported by Paul Weller (26 June) and Taylor Swift (27 June).
The price: Varies depending on day: £53-£59.50 (plus £7.40 service charge).
Wireless 3-5 July
Finsbury Park, London
This is pop music for a young and trend-conscious crowd. The line-up includes Jessie J, Nicki Minaj, A$AP Rocky, Mary J Blige, Charli XCX, Jess Glynne, Labrinth, Drake, Wretch 32 and Fuse ODG. There's an extra day on the Wireless bill this year. Wireless 10 celebrates the 10-year anniversary of Wireless on 28 June, with acts from the past decade including Rita Ora, De la Soul and Katy B.
The price: £209.50 for three days; £68.75 for one day; Wireless 10 £76.45.
Tramlines 24-26 July
Various locations, Sheffield city centre
After attracting 35,000 people back in 2009, the festival has grown considerably, and recently won best metropolitan festival at the UK Festival awards. The festival takes place across 70 venues and four main stages in the city centre, including the Leadmill and the O2 Academy. At this year's event you can catch Wu Tang Clan, The Charlatans, Basement Jaxx, The Buzzcocks, Kate Tempest, Ghostpoet, Billy Bragg, Slaves, Mike Skinner, Marika Hackman and The Sugar Hill Gang. Tramlines is very eco-friendly and seeks to reduce its carbon footprint as each year goes by.
The price: £33 (including booking fee); under-12s free.
On Blackheath 12-13 September
Blackheath, London
Kelis, Elbow, Manic Street Preachers, Anna Calvi, Madness and Laura Mvula will all rock up to Blackheath for this family-friendly daytime event. There'll be a playground area with plenty of games and child-friendly entertainment.
The price: Adults from £45; 13- to 16-year-olds from £25; under-12s free.
