The Week in Music: People power means Franz Ferdinand fans have it so much better
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Perhaps you've been lucky enough to have a song request granted at a gig. If not, your chances are about to increase. Some bands are inviting fans to choose their setlist, like Franz Ferdinand who are offering a choice of 15 singles, album tracks and B-sides spanning their four-album career, to be performed at their show at the 6 Music Festival in Manchester on Saturday 1 March. The six songs with the most votes will open the set. Vote at bbc.co.uk/6music until 7pm on Monday.
Anyone headed for Metallica's show at Sonisphere in Knebworth has even more steer – only one number in Metallica's traditional 18-song set will be chosen by the band themselves. Buy a ticket for the hard-rock festival and you will receive a code to vote for songs from the band's 140-song catalogue.
Keep a tab on how your choices are faring at metallicabyrequest.com. Currently riding high with 66 per cent of fans' votes, you can be sure that "Master of Puppets" will feature.
Damon's still the main draw
As well as headlining the 6 Music Festival, Damon Albarn will also be top of the bill at Latitude this July. It's his only other UK festival appearance this year, and Latitude has announced some other exclusives, too – Australia's psych-rockers Tame Impala, 70s rock'n'soul legends Daryl Hall and John Oates, and the recently reformed dream-pop band Slowdive whose London show at Village Underground in May sold out instantly.
Gig of the week
A Foals gig is always thrilling, with plenty of antics from their energetic frontman Yannis Philippakis who has a tendency to crowd-surf while playing guitar. Their shows at north London's Alexandra Palace on Friday and Saturday are their biggest to date.
