Standon Calling: 5 acts you shouldn't miss at this year's festival
Standon boasts a host of brilliant new names alongside its steller headline acts
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Standon Calling is almost upon us and we’re very excited about it.
Not only are they offering some amazing big names: Grace Jones, Orbital, Laura Mvula, Clean Bandit, Edtiors, Gary Numan and Kate Tempest, they’ve also put together an incredible range of new faces, which is what we love here at The Independent.
Here are five of our favourite artists you definitely shouldn’t miss at this year’s festival.
Fickle Friends
I know I go on about these guys a lot but go see them live and you won’t be disappointed. Their summery brand of electronic-pop will have you dancing into the night, and they clearly love performing; everyone looks as though they’re having a ton of fun on stage.
Tracks to listen to before the festival: “Hello Hello”, “Swim”, “Glue”
Yonaka
These guys are a great new band who recently signed to Atlantic Records - don’t say rock is dead before you check them out.
Listen to: “Wouldn’t Wanna Be Ya”, “Drongo”, “Ignorance”
Strong Asian Mothers
This London-based band have been attracting fans in the underground scene for some time - bringing in hip hop, trap and pop together for some rapturously-received live shows.
Listen to: “Don’t Let Go”, “Animal”, “Just Another”
Nadia Rose
We tipped Nadia as one of our ones to watch at the beginning of this year and since then she’s been going from strength to strength. You may have heard her outstanding track “Skwod” but that’s not the only song you should listen to before her (brilliant) live show.
Also listen to: “Tight Up”, “Boom”, “Murder”
Dutch Uncles
Dutch Uncles gave us some great advice about festival food back in May (apparently pizza is the way to go), and they’re also performing on The Independent’s stage at Standon this year. Their ace record Big Balloon was released in June this year so they have plenty of material for their live gig - expect jangly, funky guitars and and nods to European techno.
Listen to: “Streetlight”, |”Big Ballon”, “Baskin’”.
