At 70, Sixto Rodriguez is enjoying a revival few expected, largely because few had even heard of the Detroit singer-songwriter before this year's superlatively stirring documentary Searching for Sugar Man.
Making his acquaintance has been a joy because he's that rarity: a quiet and articulate one-off who seemed truly capable of delivering on those "the next Dylan" soundbites on his early 1970s albums, until his record label bailed out on him.
The fact that few people bought his two records makes his return a bittersweet one, too – did we miss out on 40 years of great music? – but it at least offers hearty proof that there can be second acts in American life, even for a voice as modest as his.
