Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Welcome to the launch of Music Box season 5, where we'll be sharing intimate performances by some of the best new artists around – plus one or two others you'll likely be more familiar with.

Opening the fifth series of these stripped-down sessions – filmed on-site at The Independent's tiny studio – is Nigerian-Canadian singer and multi-instrumentalist Falana. She caught my attention with her unique, sprawling song structures and melding of soul, jazz, pop and afrobeats.

Early influences included vintage and contemporary soul singers like Etta James, Lauryn Hill, Amy Winehouse and Erykah Badu. A stint in Cuba where Falana studied music led to her first experiences of recording her own music and further explore her artistic voice.

Her new EP, Chapter One, is out now and includes the new songs "Repeat" and "Ride or Die", which Falana performed for Music Box along with her earlier single "To Bernard".

Watch the session and tune back in each Monday at 3pm for new Music Box sessions! See all of the previous sessions here.
