Exclusive album stream: Mary Epworth, Dream Life
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Having made her name following a Sandy Denny tribute concert in 2008, Mary Epworth spent four years revitalising the kind of psychedelic pop singer the late 60s created so well. The resulting feral stomp of ‘Black Doe’ was play-listed at 6 Music and Radio 2 and introduced a fiery raw talent.
With an upbringing involving Gypsy music workshops and Queensryche records, following the lineage of leftfield outsider folk to create Dream Life’s 11 tracks of woozy warmth was inevitable, as our exclusive album stream below reveals.
Epworth’s kaleidoscopic pagan folk owes as much to Genesis as Fairport Convention, indeed you can feel Peter Gabriel’s influence lurking on Those Nights, while her East Anglia roots are geographically represented by the record’s sparse beauty.
Dream Life is a powerfully evocative album which portrays the countryside as a playground of excitable Mechanicals chillaxing in the sun. Epworth’s mesmerising songs embody the timelessness of a fabled shanty, albeit one played through a folk-gaze fuzzbox.
Dream Life is released June 18 through Hand Of Glory/ADA
