One good thing to emerge from the latter's demise is that they have had more time to plough into their label's website, the result of which is a shiny new download store selling their entire back catalogue on digital format: http://shop. chemikal.co.uk/. That's more than 650 songs.
They are the latest indie label to sell their catalogue online, following Subpop on http://www.subpop.com/catalog/digital and Touch and Go on http://www.touchandgorecords.com.
The Glasgow label uncovered the Scottish indie scene, launching the careers of Mogwai, Arab Strap, and even Interpol, whose first UK single they released in 2000 in their limited-edition singles club, Fukd id. Every track in the Chemikal catalogue can be streamed for free, and the download tracks are tagged with cover art and song lyrics where available.
As well as the MP3 downloads – available for 69p, less than iTunes' 79p downloads and twice the quality at 256K bitrate MP3 files – their online shop is offering every physical release in their catalogue, including solo albums from Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton, Bis, Aerogramme and the ultra-rare Interpol Fukd I.D. #3 12in. For über-fans, there are rare exclusives including the sole official Delgados concert bootleg Live at the Fruitmarket: Glasgow 2001, Arab Strap's soundtrack to the short film Rogue Farm, and other Arab Strap rarities. In April, the label is also re-releasing Mogwai's Young Team as a 10th anniversary expanded album.
Meanwhile, you can download a free compilation from http://www.chemikal.co.uk/downloads.htm, among which is the track "Where We've Left Our Love", which didn't make Arab Strap's album The Last Romance; the song "Blackwell" from The Delgados' first-ever BBC session in 1995; the title song from Mother and the Addicts' debut 2005 album Take The Lovers Home Tonight; and Mogwai's "Christmas Song".
