Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Books
'The Map of Me: True Tales of Mixed Heritage'; 'The Swimming Pool Library' by Alan Hollinghurst; and tons of short stories for the BBC National Short Story Awards, for which I was a judge last month.

Music
I'm listening to The xx, Golden Silvers, Chet Baker and Shirley Bassey.

Television
I am not watching any TV at the moment as I'm on tour, but I shall slumber down in the New Year to watch the 'EastEnders' omnibus. I have just finished season two of '24'.

Films
Just watched 'Into The Wild' and 'The Beat That My Heart Skipped', both fantastic films.

Theatre, dance and opera
The last piece I went to was a modification of 'The Rite of Spring' by the Ballet Boyz. Very modern and different; Michael Nunn and William Trevitt staged a radical new interpretation. I hope to do a dance piece next.

Art
I went to the Gallery of Modern Art in Glasgow. I had unfortunately just missed their exhibition on gay art featuring David Hockney and Robert Mapplethorpe, among others. The good news, though, was that there was an really interesting Impressionism show on.
