Cultural Life: Daniel Merriweather, musician
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Music
I'm listening to Johnny Cash, Jay-Z, Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, Howlin' Wolf and 'This Charming Mixtape' by Theophilus London.
Books
I've been reading lots of Jean Baudrillard. Just finished 'The Perfect Crime'. I'm halfway through 'Simulacra and Simulation' and I have 'The Intelligence of Evil or the Lucidity Pact' waiting in the wings.
Television
Generally TV scares me, but 'The Wire' is dope.
Films
The last film I saw was 'Tokyo!' which is actually three short films directed by Michel Gondry, Leos Carax and Joon-Ho Bong. I also loved 'Into the Wild'. One of my favourite movies is the original 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory'.
Theatre
I saw an Off-Broadway production called 'Fela', which is a musical about Fela Kuti, who is one of my favourite artists.
Visual arts
I really like Miru Kim's 'Underground Art'. She took this series of photos of herself naked in underground caverns, sewers and abandoned warehouses in New York.
Daniel Merriweather's new single, "Impossible", is out on 17 August
