Your support makes all the difference.Last week, Grizzly Bear unveiled the second single from their new 10-track album, Shields, due on 18 September – coming a little more than three years after their much-loved third album, Veckatimest.
"Yet Again", the new single, was released instantly on all the usual digital avenues and can be streamed at ind.pn/NllXRr. The song kicks off in lovely languid manner with some chiming guitars and the elegant vocals of singer Ed Droste before building into something entirely larger and heavier with a cacophony of sound exploding by the end.
Elvis is never lost for words
In a piece about Elvis Costello in online magazine Slate (ind.pn/NlmoeH), writer John Lingan posits that Costello wrote "one of the best rock-star memoirs of the last decade", albeit in far more truncated form and without publisher or title –so it won't challenge fêted rock memoirs by Bob Dylan, Patti Smith or Keith Richards. Costello's came in the form of 17 long personal essays between 2001 and 2006, accompanying Rhino Records re-release of his back catalogue. Due to various rights issues, the memoirs have seemingly disappeared, But the essays can be found on Costello's website, where he charts his work, elviscostello.com/records.
Happy daze for the Dum Dums
Hazy LA indie-pop band Dum Dum Girls have a new EP coming, the suitably titled End of Daze EP landing on 25 September. The first track from the record, "Lord Knows", can be downloaded now, free at wearedumdumgirls.com. It finds them in slow, stately mode with a guitar line that recalls "Crimson and Clover" by Tommy James and the Shondells.
A truly eclectic collective
The cdza collective are a group of musicians and video-makers who, for the last few months, have been posting impressive videos of the varying musical interpretations – from seven pianists playing an instrumental version of "Niggas in Paris" on one piano, to a singer running through 60 years of pop songs that attempt to woo women (hint: they don't do it like they used to), to performing "What a Wonderful World" in 16 different music genres.
