Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Natasha Khan, aka the English baroque-pop musician Bat for Lashes, has a new album on the way.

The Haunted Man, her third LP and first in three years, will be released in mid-October – and it comes with some fairly racy cover art (ind.pn/O39KFI.html). On Monday she premiered a song from the LP, "Laura", a sombre, spare, piano-led ballad with hints of drama as the song rises on the chorus line, "Oh, Laura, you're more than a superstar." It comes with a nice-looking moody video – find song and promo clip at batforlashes.com.

The rap collective that keeps on giving

After the hullabaloo in recent weeks over Frank Ocean it seems there's still no escaping members of the Odd Future collective. Now it's the turn of rapper-member Earl Sweatshirt (right), who guests alongside the mysterious Captain Murphy on a new song from experimental electronica producer Flying Lotus. "Between Friends" is the latest track to appear in the Adult Swim free singles series – get it at ind.pn/O39eaE. Flying Lotus keeps sounds suitably cut-up and jazzy as the two rappers trade rhymes. It's speculated that Murphy is a moniker of Odd Future's Tyler, the Creator, or in fact, just Sweatshirt under another name, and as rhymes are traded it's hard to decipher who's saying what.

Hazy shades of summer

Feeling in distinctly summery mood, the UK electro artist SBTRKT shared a new track on his SoundCloud this week – snd.sc/MDWx6y – accompanied by a hazy, sun-based photograph. The piece, "Gloss", is a brief and blissful blast of whirring beats, synths and other sounds.

Fresh fare from the Black Cabbies

After several years of providing entertaining lo-fi performance videos shot in the back of a London cab, the people behind Black Cab Sessions are expanding their empire to include a record label, so-titled BCS Records. Their first signing is the London-based female singer-songwriter Wall, leading off with a single release,"Magazine", and an EP to follow. Find a video of Wall playing in the back of a cab and some more tracks on BCS's website, at ind.pn/O3a8nr.
