Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

A month after Lady Gaga swept the MTV Video Music Awards with eight wins, the American Music Awards has Eminem taking the lead along with pop country act Lady Antebellum with five nods each.

The candidates in 19 categories were announced on Tuesday, covering Pop/Rock, R&B, Rap, Latin, and more.

Contenders for the top prize of the night are Eminem, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and Ke$sha for Favorite Artist.

Nominees for Favorite Album are Katy Perry's Teenage Dream against Eminem's Recovery and Justin Bieber's My World 2.0.

Lady Gaga is up for Favorite Female Artist with Katy Perry and Ke$ha.

In the soundtrack category the contenders are Glee: The Music, Volume 3: The Showstoppers, Twilight Saga: Eclipse and AC/DC's Iron Man 2 soundtrack.

In the Alternative Rock category, Favorite Artist nominees are Muse, Phoenix and Vampire Weekend and Favorite Latin Artist is between Shakira, Enrique Iglesias and Daddy Yankee.

Teen pop singer Justin Bieber received four nominations and R&B artist Usher is up for three.

Nominees are determined by radio airplay, retail sales, activity on social networks and video viewing. Winners are determined by an online vote by November 12 at http://abc.go.com/shows/american-music-awards/vote.

The show, created in 1973 to compete with the Grammys, selects winners based on public opinion not votes from members of the entertainment industry.

The awards ceremony will be televised live on ABC-TV from downtown Los Angeles at the Nokia Theater, November 21.
