Letter: Europe: in or out
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Europe: in or out
Sir: Yves Thibault de Silguy was correct in warning that Britain will lose influence in Europe if we continue to remain outside the euro (" `Second rank Britain' warned by EU", 26 July).
Your correspondents (letters, 28 July) are foolish to ignore the obvious fact that full membership of a club brings a greater say and influence than a semi-detached membership. Joining the euro is the logical extension of the Single European Act.
I want to see British ministers playing their full part in reforming those aspects of the EU which have caused concern, such as the Common Agriculture Policy, inefficiency and fraud. We will be able to pull our full weight only if we are full members sitting round every table where major decisions are made. That requires us to join the euro as soon as economic conditions permit.
