Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

COMPETITION

IN 1980 the French Film Academy confirmed what most of us already knew - that Les Enfants du Paradis (PG) is the best French film of all. It is the story of two rival actors and a femme fatale (the paradis is the gods in the theatre) against the background of Paris at the height of the Romantic movement. Made during the German Occupation, the film is the finest collaboration by scriptwriter Jacques Prevert and director Marcel Carne, and features an outstanding performance by Jean-Louis Barrault (above, pursued by a bailiff). It is re-released at the Renoir, London WC1 (071-837 8402) on Fri. The IoS has teamed up with Artificial Eye and Faber & Faber to run a competition with 25 prizes, each comprising a pair of tickets to the opening night, a film poster and a copy of the screenplay. Simply tell us what was the last completed film on which Prevert worked with Carne. Answer on a postcard to Paradis, Arts Desk, IoS, 40 City Rd, London EC1Y 2DB, by Wed (18 Aug). Usual rules apply and the editor's decision is final. Robin Buss
