IN 1980 the French Film Academy confirmed what most of us already knew - that Les Enfants du Paradis (PG) is the best French film of all. It is the story of two rival actors and a femme fatale (the paradis is the gods in the theatre) against the background of Paris at the height of the Romantic movement. Made during the German Occupation, the film is the finest collaboration by scriptwriter Jacques Prevert and director Marcel Carne, and features an outstanding performance by Jean-Louis Barrault (above, pursued by a bailiff). It is re-released at the Renoir, London WC1 (071-837 8402) on Fri. The IoS has teamed up with Artificial Eye and Faber & Faber to run a competition with 25 prizes, each comprising a pair of tickets to the opening night, a film poster and a copy of the screenplay.
