From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

A YouTube channel has recreated the famous opening credits to The Simpsons using Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Animal Crossing is a series of social simulation games published by Nintendo. New Horizons, the latest entry which was released earlier this year on the Nintendo Switch console, gives players the ability to heavily customise their characters and environments.

YouTube channel Great-Bit Arcade utilised this customisation to painstakingly recreate the opening of the beloved animation, right down to the chalkboard and couch gags.

The chalkboard gag sees “Bart” writing “I promise to pay back all my loans”, a reference to New Horizon‘s loan repayment system, which sits at the centre of the game’s loose set of objectives.

For the couch gag, the “Simpson family” are seen bursting into their living room, but come across Tom Nook and Isabelle, two Animal Crossing mainstays, sitting in their stead.

Viewers were impressed with the video, with one commenter noting that Simpsons creator Matt Groening should “see if he can put this intro into a future episode”.

Others described the video as “adorable”.

“If someone showed me this and said it was real, I’d believe it,” wrote someone else. ”They’d pull one of these for sure. Great job.”

The Simpsons has increasingly experimented with different animation styles in its opening credits in recent years, sometimes commissioning guest animators to design the famous couch gags.

Last week, it was revealed that New Horizons has now sold more than 22 million units in under four months, making it one of Nintendo’s biggest commercial successes to date.
