Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Answers on a postcard, to arrive by Friday 11 June: DETAILS 436, IoS, 1 Canada Square, Canary Wharf, London E14 5DL. Three winners will each receive a bottle of champagne
Details 434 came from Luca Signorelli's The Damned, part of his spectacular fresco cycle in Orvieto Cathedral (painted 1499-1504), which illustrates the end of the world. This scene - devils duffing up the souls of the lost - works like a 3-D Jackson Pollock. It's a drama of containment. As in a Pollock - where the swarming, fermenting paintwork often stops at a margin, fizzing, just short of the painting's edges - the main force of Signorelli's image comes from the way the frenzy of bodily energies is packed, a tableau held within the picture's ground, an enormous torment-scrum struggling (it seems) against the bounds of a marked pitch.
The first three correct entries came from: S Nicholas, London NW3; T Rolph, Cambridge; and R Karnac, Ruislip
