Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

First Call

THE FUSS over the Royal National Theatre hosting the all-singing, all- dancing Oklahoma! (right) - that the venue was more suited to heavier subjects than nimble dancers - was shouted down by the sell-out season this summer. Next year Trevor Nunn's production will transfer to the West End. Described as his greatest work, Rodgers and Hammerstein's story of Laurey and the two rivals for her affections should shine brightly nestled between familiar West End long-runners.

Last Call

SOME PEOPLE think that John Otway has always wanted to be a star, but has made a career from his failure to be one. Otway never justified his stab at stardom that began with a larger record deal than those of The Clash, The Jam or The Sex Pistols. A one-hit wonder, his career disintegrated into a farce, with some fans now coming to concerts just to see his shambolic incompetence. This may go some way to explaining his enduring popularity among students, and why the up-coming concert is sponsored by Viz.
