Your support makes all the difference.The Sundance Institute announced the 57 films selected for its non-competition categories for the 27th annual Sundance Film Festival, January 20-30 in Park City, Utah.
The 58 films in competition, unveiled on December 1, includes stars such as Al Pacino, Kevin Spacey, Pierce Brosnan, Tobey Maguire, and Elizabeth Banks.
Founded by Robert Redford, Sundance is the top showcase for American and international independent films, drawing an attendance of more than 40,000 including Hollywood executives in search of film deals and new talent.
The 2011 event kicks off the year with screenings of 115 feature-length films, from 28 countries with 92 world premieres. Some of the highlights in the Narratives Premiere section include:
- The Details with Tobey Maguire ( Spider-Man) and Elizabeth Banks ( W)
- My Idiot Brother starring Paul Rudd ( Dinner for Schmucks), Elizabeth Banks ( W), Zooey Deschanel ( 500 Days of Summer) and Emily Mortimer ( Shutter Island)
- Salvation Boulevard starring Pierce Brosnan ( The Ghost Writer), Jennifer Connelly ( Creation), and Marisa Tomei ( The Wrestler)
- Margin Call starring Kevin Spacey ( Moon), Paul Bettany ( Iron Man 2), Jeremy Irons ( Elizabeth I), Zachary Quinto ( Star Trek), and Stanley Tucci ( Burlesque).
The closing film, The Son of No One, directed by Dito Montiel, stars Al Pacino, Katie Holmes and Juliette Binoche in a drama about two men reliving murders they committed as boys.
Other categories include "Next" featuring innovative low-budget films, the Native Showcase highlighting indigenous filmmakers, midnight showings of horror films and the bizarre, and "New Frontier" for experimental films.
Among selected Nonfiction Premieres, filmmaker Morgan Spurlock ( Super Size Me) screens The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, about branding, advertising and product placement. Another documentary, Becoming Chaz, follows Cher's daughter, Chastity Bono, making the transition from female to male.
In addition, Life in a Day, a film produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Kevin Macdonald, will debut. This collective internet project was created from YouTube submissions; the film depicts life on July 24, 2010 from footage shot around the world.
