It combines an improvisatory, documentary-style feel with real lyricism. Freida Pinto carries it as Trishna, the young woman from a poor rural background who becomes the lover of Anglo-Indian businessman Jay (Riz Ahmed.) We're a long way from Wessex but the transplanting of the tragic Hardy novel is surprisingly effective.
