Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (U)

A sparkling new print of Howard Hawks's 1953 musical comedy, which paired Monroe and Russell at their spangled, curvaceous, lipsticky best.

Having outgrown their small town of Little Rock, Arkansas, the girls (one blonde gold-digger obsessed with diamonds and one romantic brunette with a sassy tongue) board a cruise to Europe looking for husbands, while fighting off snoopy detectives and suspicious fathers. The humour seems a touch broad, 56 years later, but the songs stand up (especially "Bye Bye Baby" and "Is There Anyone Here for Love?") and the athletics display by the shipboard Olympics team (in swimwear) is probably the gayest scene ever put on celluloid.
