Tedium is a virtue of Kelly Reichardt's revisionist Western, a viscerally ponderous tale of 19th-century American pioneers travelling across Oregon at the speed of a creaking wagon wheel. Michelle Williams is in fine, flinty form as the piece's proto-feminist heroine, but it's the enveloping mood of paranoia and the Malickian immensity of Reichardt's camerawork that truly make this a slog to savour.
