After a 14-year absence, Whit Stillman returns with an eccentric campus comedy about a snobbish queen bee (Greta Gerwig) who dreams of inventing an international dance craze.
Set in a pastel-hued, whimsical reality with only a passing resemblance to our own, Damsels in Distress will irritate many, but it's refreshingly distinctive, and if you can take it on its own terms, it has plenty of sweetness and sly humour to offer. Nicholas Barber
