A Secret (15)

Claude Miller's adaptation addresses the ghost that won't die: France's actions during the Occupation. François (Quentin Dubuis), a shy adolescent, suspects a secret behind his parents' marriage and heads down "a road of whispers" to discover it.

The way the film oscillates between a Thirties idyll of Jewish life and the dawning sense of what the Pétain government intends for it is well-handled, while François's unravelling of his family's recent past builds to a climax that feels at once shocking and inevitable.
