From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Philip Seymour Hoffman, the Oscar-winning actor, has died in New York aged 46.

It is understood that heroin was found in the room (read the main news story) and that a screenwriter friend of the Capote star called the police to the actor's Greenwich Village apartment. Below is a selection of his best-known and most acclaimed films.

Capote (2005)

The film that won him the Best Actor Oscar and confirmed his status as one of the greatest actors of his generation. Hoffman played the lead in this portrait of the author Truman Capote, depicting the writing of the classic true crime book In Cold Blood.

Charlie Wilson's War (2007)

Hoffman received another three Oscar nominations. His role as maverick agent Gus Avrakotos in the 2007 CIA-in-Afghanistan romp Charlie Wilson's War won him a nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

The Master (2012)

Appearing alongside Joaquin Phoenix, Hoffman received acclaim and an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in his role as a charismatic religious writer who befriends a struggling Second World War veteran and draws him into what many suspect to be a cult.
