One such category is Best Documentary Short and when comedian Louis CK came on stage to present the award, he did not hold back.
It started off well, the comedian telling the audience the category was his "favourite award." Then he elaborated...
"This is the one Academy Award that has an opportunity to change a life - [this is not] even Documentary Feature; you can't make a dime on this. These people will never be as rich as long as they live."
"This Oscar is going home in a Honda Civic," he said to big laughs from the crowd.
"This is going to be the nicest thing they'll ever own in their life. It's gonna give them anxiety keeping it in their crappy apartment."
Ironically, it turns out the eventual winner - Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy for A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness - had actually already won an Oscar before, something she reminded the audience shortly after taking the trophy from CK's hands.
"Thank God I have two now," she said before delivering a stirring speech about her subject who miraculously survived an honour killing.
Viewers saw the funny side with many calling for the comedian to host next year's ceremony.
