From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Zac Efron and his girlfriend Vanessa Valladares have broken up, according to a friend of the actor.

KIIS FM radio star Kyle Sandilands, who has been friends with Efron for years, said on The Kyle and Jackie O Radio Show on Wednesday (21 April): “It’s not a rumour, it’s true. It’s only recent, but not like yesterday recent, but they’ve gone their separate ways.”

He added that there was “no drama” behind the break-up, explaining: “They spent a lot of time with each other when he wasn’t working, lunching and living in the mansions on the beach – it’s a fabulous life.

“And then work comes back and kicks you straight back into reality, so it’s a shame.”

Efron had been dating the Australian model for 10 months. They met last summer when Valladares was a waitress at the Byron Bay General Store.

Valladares reportedly quit her job and travelled around the country with Efron. She also appeared on his Netflix series Down To Earth with Zac Efron.

The Independent has contacted Efron’s representatives for comment.

Efron can next be seen in the thriller Gold, which follows two men as they discover the biggest gold nugget ever found and try to figure out a way to excavate it. It also stars the Australian actor Anthony Hayes.
