The reception to Fox’s latest superhero blockbuster, X-Men Apocalypse, has been somewhat mixed, the critics’ consensus being rather ‘meh’.

However, while one reviewer called it a “franchise-killing disaster”, a sequel is already definitely in the works, with writer and producer Simon Kinberg confirming the next film will continue the series’ gradual progression through the decades.

Speaking to ComingSoon (via DenOfGeek), he said “the next one is set in the 90s”, following on from X-Men: First Class (set in the 60s) X-Men: Days Of Future Past (70s), and X-Men: Apocalypse (80s).

What isn’t clear is whether he is referring to the upcoming New Mutants, directed by Josh Boon, or another X-Men film featuring the already established cast.

As noted in the report, it all depends on how the general audience reacts to the film and whether the negative reviews deter cinema goers.

In other X-Men news, the upcoming third solo Wolverine film has begun filming and has been confirmed to have an R-Rating, following the success of Deadpool.
