Mike Myers has paid tribute to fellow Austin Powers star Verne Troyer.

Troyer – best known for playing Mini-Me in the James Bond-spoofing series – died Saturday (21 April) aged 49. No official reason has been given yet.

Myers, who created and played the Austin Powers character, called Verne a “beacon of positivity” and said the actor will be “greatly missed”.

“Verne was the consummate professional and a beacon of positivity for those of us who had the honour of working with him,” Myers said.

“It is a sad day, but I hope he is in a better place. He will be greatly missed.”

Troyer’s death was announced on the actor’s official Facebook page: “It is with great sadness and heavy hearts to write that Verne passed away today.

“Verne was an extremely caring individual. He wanted to make everyone smile, be happy, and laugh. Anybody in need, he would help to any extent possible.”

It continued: “Verne was also a fighter when it came to his own battles. Over the years he’s struggled and won, struggled and won, struggled and fought some more, but unfortunately this time was too much.

“You never know what kind of battle someone is going through inside. Be kind to one another. And always know, it’s never too late to reach out to someone for help.”

He was recently baptised while surrounded by family, the message added.

Along with playing Mini-Me in Austin Powers, Troyer was also known for playing Griphook in the first Harry Potter film, and made a series of appearances on reality TV programmes, including Celebrity Big Brother in 2009.
