The clip, unveiled on Monday, sees Maverick returning to his old stomping grounds, this time as an instructor.
His past exploits, his future students are told, are “legendary”, and his teachings might make the difference between life and death.
When he admits that he wasn’t “expecting an invitation back”, Maverick is sternly reminded that he didn’t receive an invitation, but “orders”.
The trailer includes plenty of footage of Maverick getting up to gravity-defying antics along with his crowd of budding aviators.
Top Gun: Maverick will be released on 26 June in the US and 17 July in the UK.
It will star Miles Teller as a pilot trainee who is the son of Goose, Maverick’s friend portrayed by Anthony Edwards in the 1986 original.
Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, Val Kilmer, Monica Barbaro and Manny Jacinto have all joined the cast.
