The actor was cast as Spider-Man in 2015, and has played the character in five films, including Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home.
In a Variety “Actors on Actors” interview with Daniel Kaluuya, Holland recalled finding out he’d been cast in a news article.
“I got my computer, and my dog was sitting next to me,” he said. “I type in ‘Marvel’. I’ve still got the article saved on my computer. It said, ‘We would like to introduce our new Spider-Man, Tom Holland.’ I broke my computer, because I flipped it up in the air. It fell off my bed; my dog went nuts.”
Holland continued: “I ran downstairs. I was telling my family, ‘I got the part! I got the part!’”
The star said his brother was worried that the article was fake as it was around the time of the Sony hack, but then the studio called Holland and gave him the news. “It was so bizarre how it happened,” he said.
The Independent’s critic Clarisse Loughrey gave Spider-Man: Far From Home a three-star review, writing: “While Far From Home is distinctly mid-level Marvel fare, there’s a lot to be said for the fact it isn’t crushed under the weight of its own ambitions. It feels comfortably like the end of a chapter, the beginning of a new one, an epilogue, and a palate cleanser all at once. It also works perfectly well as a film about Spider-Man.”
Holland will next be starring in Cherry as a young war veteran who suffers from PTSD and opioid addiction. Kaluuya stars as Black Panther civil rights leader Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah.
