From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Let any doubt be dispensed with - Tom Hanks is officially America's favourite Hollywood star.

The Bridge of Spies actor topped the annual Harris Poll which drew the results from a survey of over 2,200 adults.

His closest competitor was actor Johnny Depp who most recently starred as real-life mobster Whitey Bulger in Black Mass.

Reigning champion Denzel Washington - this year's recipient of the Golden Globes' Cecil B. DeMille award - fell two places to third, while the top five was rounded out with Western icon John Wayne (the only deceased actor in the top ten) and Harrison Ford.

Ford was recently announced as Hollywood's most bankable star following the release of Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Force Awakens, toppling Samuel L. Jackson into second place.

Hanks - whose credits include Big, Forrest Gump and Captain Phillips - has topped the poll four times previous in 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2013.

The Harris Poll also found that the most liked Hollywood actresses were Sandra Bullock (6th) and Joy actress Jennifer Lawrence (7th).

The full top ten ran as follows:

1. Tom Hanks

2. Johnny Depp

3. Denzel Washington

4. John Wayne

5. Harrison Ford

6. Sandra Bullock

7. Jennifer Lawrence

8. Clint Eastwood

9. Brad Pitt / Julia Roberts
