From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Footage obtained by TMZ shows the actor attempting to leap from rigging onto the ledge of another building, while strapped into a safety harness; he falls short, however, and his body slams into the side of the structure.
Hoisting himself up onto the building's roof, Cruise then starts limping heavily, before nearly collapsing in front of the other crew members. He is then pulled back to the rigging on his harness, where he's then led away off camera, still limping heavily.
The extent of his injuries are not yet known; however, the stunt serves as a reminder of the kinds of frequent risks and sacrifices that go into filmmaking, both for stunt performers and actors who do their own stunt work.
The 55-year-old Cruise is famous for insisting on doing almost all of his own stunts, rare for an A-list actor, particularly since he's demonstrated a certain thrill-seeking approach to his work.
That includes filming in zero-gravity for the airplane crash scene in The Mummy, clinging to the side of a plane as it's taxiing in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, and scaling Dubai's Burj Khalifa in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol.
Cruise has already been seen performing several high-octane stunts for Mission: Impossible 6, including driving a motorbike into a car in Paris and parachuting in Oxfordshire.
Mission: Impossible 6 hits UK cinemas 27 July 2018.
