The Oscar-winner, who also plays Korg in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, decided to treat fans to an Instagram live with Tessa Thompson and Mark Ruffalo to discuss 2017 sequel Thor: Ragnarok.
Fan questions naturally steered towards the new film, which will introduce Natalie Portman as a female version of the superhero, and Waititi even shared some concept art of New Asgard, which will be a central location.
One question he couldn’t answer though was whether Tom Hiddleston’s Loki would appear in the film.
Loki is Thor’s villainous brother, who will be at the centre of hs very own Disney+ television show in 2022.
Considering that confirming his appearance either way might offer spoilers about that show, Waititi responded simply: “I couldn’t say.”
While this statement could work both ways – Waititi clearly does not want to spoil his film after all – the reason why fans are thinking this hints that he will return is due to the fact Waititi was more than happy to debunk the theory that Fantastic Four villain Silver Surfer would show up.
It’s long been rumoured that the Loki series will set the character up for a grand return to the MCU, potentially as Phase Four’s primary villain.
Regardless, it seems extremely unlikely that he won’t appear in at least a flashback scene in Thor: Love and Thunder, which is set to be released on 5 November 2021.
